A marketer's dream or nightmare? 29% of QSR buyers considered going elsewhere

$1.7 billion of QSR consumer purchases could have been spent differently during the 3 months ending August 2025; here’s why.

Fonto data shows that approximately $1.7 billion of QSR consumer purchases could have been spent differently during the 3 months ending August 2025.

From June to August 2025, Australians aged 18 and over spent something in the vicinity of $5.7 billion at Quick Service Restaurants across Australia. In addition to tracking consumer spending, Fonto also survey buyers about their customer experience shortly after transactions hit those same accounts. For the same period, 29% of QSR buyers considered going somewhere else before making their purchase.

For marketers, this means that just before the moment of purchase decision, more than 5.2 million customers and almost $1.7 billion could have been swayed during this time period alone, highlighting the importance of both long term marketing investment as well as short term price and promotion. Getting your brand in the consideration set takes hard work, and keeping top of mind in the final mile of decision making is key. Conversely, the data also represents opportunities for marketers to win over indecisive customer by providing the right messaging and offers at the right time.
