24 July, 2025

Fonto's CEO Ben Dixon was interviewed on the Fear & Greed podcast this morning chatting all things consumer spending.

The data focuses on spend per customer, which is exclusively the spend from those people who purchased at least once from the category during the period.

In Pharmacy, spend per customer is up by 12% for the June quarter, with shoppers stating that items they might have otherwise purchased at supermarket were cheaper, easier to find at the pharmacy or simply not available at Coles or Woolies

Petrol & Convenience spend per customer is down by almost 13% for the quarter, largely due to the impact of hybrid and electric vehicles, driving down both fuel and associated convenience purchases

Alcohol retail spend is down across the board, with Australians stepping back spend per capita to the tune of more than 10%. So far, Fonto are yet to see the transition of 1st Choice and Vintage Cellars customers across to Liquorland as they consolidate their brands.

Beauty spend per customer amongst dedicated retailers was up by more than 13% for the June quarter, capping a shift back toward discretionary spending amongst those who purchased at least once from the category.

Overall, a number of discretionary spend categories are up for the June quarter, while a number of non-discretionary (Plus alcohol retail) were down.
